Subtitling

Q . What is a Prep-Station?
A . A Prep (short for preparation) -Station is a specialized product for translators and subtitle editors. Aside from being a basic text editor, it also has many special functions to make efficient editing of subtitle texts. Prep-Station also handles editing of time codes for subtitles in a file. These are often synchronized directly to the video that is played within the Prep- Station. Old systems relied on analogue video, thus requiring extra hardware.
Modern Prep-Stations like Tempo use Windows Media and MPEG video files are examples. This allows even faster production of subtitles. It also means that there is no requirement for additional hardware, allowing the users to run Tempo on a laptop.

Q . There are many subtitle file formats, 890, CIP etc, which one should I use?
A .Typically, subtitles are stored within a file and all subtitles for a specific program for one language are put in one file. There is no universal standard that everyone uses. Primarily, STL is a format defined by EBU targeting the use of subtitles in the tele-text transmission format. Different manufacturers have often created their own formats for better support of other features and languages. 890 is the widely used format in the subtitling market. The CIP format is used by the modern Preparation Station.

Q .What is in-vision subtitling?
A .In-vision means having a video signal pass through a subtitle inserter that inserts subtitle text into the picture. The output of the subtitle inserter is the video signal with text overlaid. When this is done in an offline production environment, it is also called burn-in subtitling. As a result, it becomes a new recording with the subtitle texts in the video picture.

Q . Why so many transmission formats like DVB, teletext etc?
A . When closing the transmitting subtitles (as separate data from the video) there are various protocols depending on the transmission format. The most commonly used are:
the EBU teletext protocol for the VBI in TV signals can be used to transmit subtitles; this is widely used in Europe for hard of hearing subtitles and also for multi-lingual subtitling. DVB Subtitling is used in DVB transmissions. Since it is bitmap based, it supports any language and is therefore not only used in Europe, but commonly in Asia and other parts of the world also.
Line-21 closed captioning is also using the VBI in TV signals to transmit subtitles. This standard is mainly used in the United States for the hearing impaired people.

Q . What is the difference between captioning and subtitling?
A .Subtitling is the basic term for conveying the dialogue of a program using text displayed in the picture. Captioning is a term used for subtitling for hearing impaired, mainly in the USA.

Q .How many languages of subtitling can be transmitted in one channel?
A .This depends entirely on what transmission format is used. For example, in EBU teletext, theoretically you can have 800 languages. However, as languages are transmitted on separate teletext pages and pages are transmitted serially, each language added causes a delay when it is actually displayed. Therefore, there is a practical limitation in teletext to the number of languages that can be used for subtitling.

During the design process, we request our client to give the approvals at certain milestones before proceeding further. At the conclusion of a project, the client may request the artwork in various formats.

Q .How do I check the progress of the project during the design process?
A .The client is kept abreast of the progress of the project through our approval process. We present the work to the client at certain stages and wait for approval before we continue work. We find that this process keeps the client involved and prevents any breakdown in communication. In between these milestones, the client can call to get update information.

Q .How will I receive my design project once it is finished?
A .The finished project is yours upon receipt of final payment. At your request, we will supply the electronic files to you on CD, floppy or through e-mail. We also keep a copy of your project on file for later updates or in case you lose your copy.

Q .Who owns the copyright for work Scribble Graphics done for me?
A .Copyright is yours upon receipt of final payment. We do reserve the right to use any work for promotional purposes.

Q .How does your logo design process work?
A .We first discuss the client's needs, target market, and uses for designing the logo. We then ask for samples of existing logos that the client likes or dislikes getting an idea of the client’s taste. Sometimes the client already has a design concept in mind. In other times, the client has no idea what he/she wants. Either way, our designers make sure they've collected enough information before they begin their work. Our logo design service is very flexible. If you'd like to see a few concepts or if you need our service, then we can be giving the price tag according to your needs.

A . We can usually accommodate your rush job depending on how full our production schedule is. If a job in production is interrupted by a rush job, we reserve the right to add an additional 50% – 100% on top of the normal price.
